ICOM LAC Board

Term 2025–2028

Elected during the ICOM General Conference held in Dubai in 2025, the Board is composed of a Chair, a Vice-Chair, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and three Board Members.

Chair: Lauran Bonilla-Merchav (ICOM Costa Rica)

Lauran lives in Abangares, where her husband grows cucumbers and squash, and where together they raise their two children surrounded by forest, iguanas, and monkeys. She holds a PhD in Art History and is an academic at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Costa Rica and at the Chorotega Campus of the National University. Through her teaching in these two distinct contexts (the former being the main campus of the only Central American university offering a degree in Art History; the latter being rural and focused on sustainability), she shares her passion for art, heritage, and museums. In addition to her commitment to ICOM LAC, she serves as Secretary of the International Committee for Social Museology (SOMUS), where she develops her interest in community museums. After the major achievement represented by her family, she considers her next most important accomplishment to be co-leading ICOM Define, contributing to an updated and consensual definition of the museum.

 

Vice-Chair: Julián Roa Triana (ICOM Colombia)

Museologist and designer (BA in Graphic Design, National University of Colombia, 2006 / MSc in Museology, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, 2012). Since 2006, he has developed projects for museums and organisations in Colombia, Peru, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania. He has also worked as a lecturer and researcher in museology and design at Universidad Externado de Colombia, Universidad del Bosque (Colombia), the Ministry of Culture of Peru, and Universidad La Salle (Peru). He has served as an advisor in museological planning, sustainability, exhibition design, and museum creation for the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, the National Museum of Colombia, the Panóptico Museum of Ibagué, and the museums of the colonial city of Santo Domingo. He is currently a partner at Boga Visual, a firm dedicated to the development of visual and exhibition projects, and museologist for the Consotá Salt Springs Museum project led by the Technological University of Pereira. He is also a Board Member of ICOM IC Ethics and a Fellow of the British Museum’s International Training Programme.

 

Secretary: Nathiam Vega (ICOM Venezuela)

PhD in Cultural Heritage, Museologist, and BA in Fine Arts, with a distinguished professional career in Venezuela. She has directed the Alejandro Otero Museum and the Valencia Museum of Art and served as Director of Museological Processes at the National Art Gallery. Active in the museum field since 2000, she has also served as General Coordinator of the National Museum System of Venezuela (SiNM). Her work has promoted the dissemination of Venezuelan art and the professionalisation of museum staff, including the creation of the Museology Training Programme in 2016 and the leadership of the Registry, Census, and Diagnostic of the country’s museum institutions. She has extensive experience in collections management, curatorship, editorial projects, exhibition production, and coordination of national and international loans. She currently serves as General Coordinator of Special Projects at the National Museums Foundation, works as an independent consultant, is Vice-President of ICOM Venezuela, a member of the editorial board of Museos.Ve, and a university lecturer. She has also served as spokesperson for the ICOM Regional Alliance for Latin America and the Caribbean (ICOM LAC).

 

Treasurer: Édgar González (ICOM Venezuela)

PhD in Comparative Museology from the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK). Specialist in Cultural Management and Cultural Policy from the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, Germany. He holds a BA in Literature, with a specialisation in Research and Criticism, from the University of Zulia (Venezuela). He has served as President of the National Museums Foundation, General Director of the Carlos Cruz-Diez Print and Design Museum (MEDI), and Head of the Department of Culture at the Central Bank of Venezuela. He was Coordinator of the Museology specialisation at the National Experimental University of the Arts (Unearte), where he has been an Associate Professor since 2017. He is an expert in cooperation, international relations, and cultural diplomacy, and works as a trainer and lecturer in museological management and heritage. As a researcher and curator, he has developed exhibition projects nationally and internationally. He served as President of the Venezuelan National Committee of ICOM for two terms (2017–2019 and 2020–2023) and as Treasurer of ICOM LAC (2022–2025).

 

Board Member: Luciana Menezes de Carvalho (ICOM Brazil)

Museologist graduated from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro – UNIRIO (2006), where she also completed her Master’s degree (2008) and PhD (2017) in Museology and Heritage. A federal public servant since 2008, she has worked as a museologist at UNIRIO since 2021. She served as Director of the Museum of Memory and Heritage of the Federal University of Alfenas (2011–2021), where she consolidated projects in heritage education and community participation. She is the founder and President of the GENMA Collective – Gestation and Nutrition of Museums. A member of ICOM since 2008, she is currently Vice-President of ICOM Brazil (since 2024) and a member of the ICOM NEC (since 2024). She served on the ICOFOM Board (2019–2023), was President of ICOFOM LAC (2020–2023), and a Board Member of ICOFOM LAC (2014–2020), actively contributing to international debates on the theoretical foundations of museology.

 

Board Member: Melissa Campos (ICOM El Salvador)

 

BA in Anthropology from the Technological University of El Salvador (UTEC), with postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogotá, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Cultural Heritage and Territory, with a specialisation in Conservation, through a reciprocity scholarship from the Government of Colombia. Her professional career has developed primarily in the museum field, with over fifteen years of experience in conservation and restoration of movable cultural heritage, as well as curatorial management, notably as curator of the University Museum of Anthropology (MUA-UTEC). She currently works as a full-time researcher and lecturer at UTEC, focusing on culture, cultural heritage, and urban anthropology.

She is a founding member and Board Member of the ICOM El Salvador National Committee. Within ICOM, she serves as the representative of the Regional Alliance for Latin America and the Caribbean on the Academic and Programming Board of the ICOM–Shanghai University International Research and Exchange Centre of Museums (ICOM IMREC), as a Board Member of ICOM LAC, and as a Board Member of the International Committee for Sociomuseology (ICOM SOMUS).

Her work integrates research, management, and cultural action, seeking to strengthen the social role of museums and promote a participatory, critical, and territorially grounded museology. She also maintains a strong commitment to science communication as a means of sharing research results in an accessible and meaningful way for communities.

Board Member: Hugo Calle Forrest (ICOM Ecuador)

Anthropologist, museologist, historian, and cultural manager with a solid academic background that includes studies in Anthropology with a specialisation in Cultural and Heritage Management and a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the Salesian Polytechnic University; a BA in Tourism from Espíritu Santo University; a Master’s degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology and a Master’s degree in Cultural Management from the Open University of Catalonia and the University of Girona; as well as a Master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the University of Guayaquil. Professionally, he has held various positions in cultural institutions, including Cultural Mediator at the Municipal Museum of Guayaquil, Head of Cultural Management at the Guayaquil Historical Park, Deputy Director and Director of Culture of the Provincial Government of Guayas, Director of the Municipal Museum of Babahoyo, Provincial Coordinator of Cooperation and Culture of the Provincial Government of Los Ríos, and Director of the Anthropological Museum of Contemporary Art. He has developed historical research, curatorial processes, and museological projects for permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as itinerant and municipal museum initiatives. He is the author of several publications and academic articles related to cultural management, heritage, identity, memory, and museums. He served as a Board Member of ICOFOM LAC. He currently works as Director of Culture and Tourism of the Provincial Government of Los Ríos, as a part-time lecturer in Archaeology at ESPOL and at Espíritu Santo University (UEES), and as President of ICOM Ecuador.
