Mission and objectives
The ICOM LAC Regional Alliance is a component of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). It is composed of the Presidents of the National Committees of Latin American and Caribbean countries that are formally accredited by ICOM, as well as by the Executive Board elected by the collective every three (3) years.
Its headquarters change according to the country of residence of the President elected at the ICOM LAC General Assembly. The presidency is currently held by Costa Rica.
Our mission and objectives
The mission of the ICOM LAC Alliance is to serve as an effective forum for cooperation among museums and museum professionals in Latin America and the Caribbean, dedicated to preserving and safeguarding heritage and to raising awareness within communities of its importance and value as a social asset.
The objectives of the ICOM LAC Regional Alliance are as follows:
- To provide a forum for the exchange of information, knowledge, experience and cooperation among National Committees in the region;
- To provide a framework for cooperation among museums, museum training centres and their professionals;
- To contribute to the implementation of ICOM’s international strategic plan in the region;
- To promote ICOM membership among museum professionals and workers, as well as museum and heritage institutions in the region;
- To propose to and advise ICOM on the implementation and development of its programmes, with particular attention to the needs and context of the region;
- To disseminate, as effectively as possible, all regional activities in the field of museums and heritage protection;
- To serve the interests of the National Committees in the region;
- To ensure cooperation with other regional alliances;
- To strengthen cooperation with intergovernmental organisations based in the region.
